Situated in the quiet hillside of Galissas village, only 300 metres from one of the popular sandy beaches of the island, Ventoura Studios & Apartments is perfect for using as a restful base to explore all of Syros. As the capital of the Cyclades island complex and famous for the unique architecture of its impressive town Hermoupolis, Syros is an island that still carries its glorious pass.
So, starting from the capital town Hermoupolis, visit the imposing Town Hall. Designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller, it combines the vibe of the classical ancient Greece with the Romanticism of the West.
From there, we advise you to walk around Hermoupolis to admire its extraordinary architecture, focusing on the artistocratic district of Vaporia, where the 19th century bourgeois built their marvelous neoclassical mansions above the sea.
Visit the “Apollon” Municipal Theatre, eat at the beautiful restaurants, shop from the elegant stores, drink your coffee overlooking the Aegean, party all night at the bars or clubs.
Take a tour around the museums, such as the Archaeological Museum of Hermoupolis, where early Cycladic and byzantine finds are exposed. Visit the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis, the Historical Archive, the Ecclesiastical Museum, the glorious Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas, the Roman Catholic Church of Annunciation of the Virgin.
If you care to see El Greco’s famous icon Dormition of the Virgin, a rare combination of post-Byzantine and Italian Mannerist Stylistic and iconographic elements, then you should visit the Orthodox three-aisled basilica dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, built between 1828 and1829.
Climb up the hill, to Ano Syros; a densely built cycladic medieval settlement of the later Byzantine era with narrow roads, circular order and a radial street plan. Visit the Capuchin monastery, the Catholic Church of Saint George and wander around the narrow streets to mingle with the locals and enjoy the small stores, restaurants, taverns and coffee shops.
